The secret to Pelješac’s success lies in a unique natural phenomenon known as the Venturi effect . The Pelješac Channel is only 1.2 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point. When the summer thermal wind, the Maestral, blows in from the open sea (northwest), it “compresses” and accelerates dramatically in this strait, becoming reliable, steady and perfect for all levels of windsurfers — from beginners to professionals.
This means that while there is a light breeze in the rest of Dalmatia, there is a constant 15 to 25 knots (4 to 6 Bofors) blowing in the channel in front of Orebić and Viganj.
