Dinara Nature Park - Climb the highest point in Croatia

Croatia’s beautiful nature can be admired on almost every corner, but the highest point in the country is often underestimated. At a height of 1831 m, you have a truly breathtaking view of the surrounding area and you will never stop being amazed. You can also look towards the neighboring country of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

And the best thing is that the climb is not that difficult! Active holidaymakers will definitely get their money’s worth, but nature lovers should not miss out on this beautiful spot of nature either. Dinara is a real giant, both from near and far.

What you need to know for promotion

The best access point to the highest point in Croatia is the small village of Knin. From there you can admire Dinara even in good weather. The locals also affectionately call it “Sinjal” – which translates as “signal”. So you can’t get lost here, the mountain is always in full view.

You will probably notice at first sight that the mountain and the nature park are surprisingly barren. But that doesn’t mean that the landscape isn’t still incredibly impressive. Between the occasional bushes and trees, the picture is dominated by white limestone and slate, which stands out among the lush green grass. The nature around Dinara is more unique than anywhere else in Croatia.

Although Dinara is 1831 meters high, the path to the top is manageable even for beginners with good fitness. The hiking trail leads along beautiful landscapes where you will quickly forget that you are actually climbing the highest mountain in Croatia. From Glavaš, the entire route to the beautiful summit will take you around three to four hours. The climb is absolutely worth it, because you will not only have reached the sky of Croatia, but you will also be able to capture a unique photo opportunity for your trip

Tips for the rise of Dinara

Good hiking boots, a backpack with enough food and possible protection against wind and weather are part of your equipment. When the sky is blue and the sun is shining, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are essential, as there is hardly any shade in the barren landscape. Also have your smartphone or a camera with you to capture the impressive nature around you.

It is best to start your hike as early as possible to avoid the hot sun and other tourists. From May to October you will also be able to experience the most beautiful side of the nature park, when there is no snow and the grass shimmers wonderfully green in the sun.

Other activities in the nature park

If a hike to the summit is too much for you, a visit to the Dinara Nature Park is still worthwhile. Even from further down you can admire the exceptionally beautiful landscape and pursue other activities.

  • Hiking: There are 45 different routes to be taken throughout the nature park, each one more beautiful than the last. Like the climb, these are relatively easy to manage and offer wonderful views of nature.
  • Climbing: If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, you can also climb the mountain on one of the many steep walls, with full mountaineering equipment.
  • Wildlife watching: You will probably come across one or two creatures on your way. Despite the barren landscape, various species of eagles, goats, hares, wolves and bears call the Dinara Nature Park their home.
