Let yourself be transported back to the Middle Ages and get to know the incredibly nice residents who call Hum their home. You will certainly not forget a visit in a hurry!
It is difficult to say when and how this town was founded. However, its first settlements can probably be traced back to the 11th and 12th centuries, as the hill was already a perfect vantage point and place to build a medieval castle. Even today, this outline can still be seen within the old town. The surrounding fields and forests offer spectacular views, but were also important for the security of the fortifications in the past.
The city doesn’t really offer much space. For years, the number of residents has fluctuated between 15 and 30 people, but seems to be relatively constant. A little “fun fact” is that the city elects a new mayor every year, who represents the community and is elected by democratic vote.
But of course we don’t want to deprive you of the best sights in the city. Despite its tiny size, there is a lot to experience here and Hum is unique in every way. You should be able to see all the attractions in one day; the smallest city in the world is definitely worth a day trip.
The smallest town in the world, Hum, is located in the north-east of Istria, not far from the Učka Nature Park. The next largest town, Buzet, is only twenty minutes away. A drive by car from Rijeka takes about fifty minutes, and from Pula just under an hour. So nothing stands in the way of a day trip!
