Klis Fortress in Detail

The fortress of Klis probably has a long history, but its origins cannot be determined exactly. It was probably built in the 3rd century, making it one of the oldest fortresses in the country. Of course, its entire history cannot be summarized in such a long period of time, but the fact is that the walls have witnessed many centuries and therefore tell their own story.

In addition to its historical significance, however, Klis Fortress is best known as the backdrop for the hit series “Game of Thrones”. Croatia was one of the main filming locations for the fantasy epic, thanks to its eerily captivating landscapes and ancient castles, making it a must-see for all fans of the series or books. Klis Fortress was used for the fictional city of Meereen. During a visit, you can relive parts of the series up close!
