The Klis Fortress probably has a long history, but its origins cannot be determined with any certainty. It was probably built in the 3rd century, making it one of the oldest fortresses in the entire country. Its entire history cannot of course be summed up in such a long period of time, but the fact is that the walls have witnessed many centuries and therefore tell their own story.
But in addition to its historical relevance, Klis Fortress is best known as a setting in the hit series “Game of Thrones”. Thanks to its incredibly stunning landscapes and old castles, Croatia was one of the main filming locations for the fantasy epic and is therefore a godsend for all fans of the series or the books. By car, it only takes around twenty minutes from Split to reach the fortress on the hill above the city. By bus, it takes around three quarters of an hour. We can also recommend a hike, because during the two to three hours you will be treated to a phenomenal view of the Bay of Split, which makes a great photo opportunity.
The opening times vary depending on the time of year, but you should be able to get in from 9 a.m. to at least 4 p.m. Tickets cost the equivalent of 10 euros, and there is even a discount for children! You should also plan to spend one to two hours there to take in the scenery and take plenty of snapshots.
When visiting the Klis Fortress, you shouldn’t underestimate the entire region. The winding streets hold many surprises! Another absolute highlight is the “Stella Croatica” olive museum , which should definitely be on your list and can be found right next to the fortress.
