Croatia travel guide with information and tips on beaches, sights and excursion destinations on the island of Croatia

Vir Croatia

A small island full of surprises awaits you on Vir. Not far from the port city of Zadar , you can visit this beautiful piece of land via a bridge. There is a lot to see, from the beautiful town center of Vir to the picturesque coasts that invite you to swim.

The small towns on the island have a really pleasant charm and invite you to take your time to look at the many small streets and houses. Whether Vir, Torovi or Lozice – the atmosphere is calm and relaxed everywhere. Sitting in a cozy café and soaking up this atmosphere is a wonderful way to get to know life in Croatia better.

Of course, there are all kinds of beaches on every corner. Whether you want a quiet family beach, a beach with your dog or something more party-oriented – the island of Vir has something for every traveler. You can either look out over the other islands in the Adriatic or over the mainland, which is not far from the coast.

Thanks to its size, the island is also very easy to explore on foot. It is only around ten kilometers long and just over four kilometers wide. Hiking trails and great cycle paths connect the entire island and provide an insight into Vir’s beautiful nature.

Vir Sights

You can experience a lot in a small area. It is definitely worth spending several days on the island of Vir to take in all the little things. A varied program awaits you that you will certainly never forget.

Kaštelina : This ancient fortress was built in the 16th century under Venetian rule, like so many other castles in Croatia. It towers majestically over the ocean and is the island’s biggest highlight. As a photo opportunity, the ancient ruins are incomparable, with the lush green grass in the foreground and the blue sea in the background.

City of Vir : The largest city on the island invites you to a pleasant stay. Stroll along the beach promenade and sit down in one of the many restaurants. The view is definitely worth it. The palm trees at the harbor give you that real holiday feeling. The further inland you walk, the more fields and small farms you will discover.

Lighthouse : A beautiful lighthouse on the east side of the island, which has now been converted into an apartment. But the building is also absolutely impressive from the outside! And right next to it is the Lanterna beach, for anyone who wants to relax under the monument.

Red Stone : Unlike the rest of the island and much of Croatia, the north of Vir has an unmistakable red earth. This is an absolute tourist magnet because it is so rare. The steep coasts are also perfect for photos, but there are also beaches here to relax and enjoy this natural spectacle.

Vir insider tip

Bandira Top of the Hill : The island of Vir is mostly flat, but there is this beautiful viewpoint from which you can see the entire island. Hike or cycle to the top and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. This is especially recommended at sunset!
